MINUTES OF THE NEWPORT CITY COUNCIL MEETING
ON

A meeting of the Newport City Council was held on August 02, 2010 at 6:00
PM in Council Chambers, City Hall, 200 S. Washington Avenue, Newport, Washington,
with the following present:

At 6:00 PM, Mayor Sands called the meeting to order followed by roll call and the pledge of allegiance.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA & MINUTES:
Agreement NP2010-5 was added to the agenda under new business. Councilmember Smith moved to approve the agenda as amended and the previous meeting’s minutes; Councilmember Zorica seconded. Motion carried.
MAYOR & COUNCIL COMMENTS:
Mayor Sands thanked Councilmember Brooks for helping her with the Relay for Life purple bucket competition. She raised $1,200.00 and the Mayor of Priest River raised $950.00. There was a Mayor’s challenge and Mayor Sands won the challenge by raising the most money.
Booth and LaDuke would like to come back to Newport in September to have another car sale. Councilmember Burnett moved to allow them to hold another car sale in Newport in September; Councilmember Smith seconded. Motion carried.
Deputy Clerk/Treasurer Endahl and City Administrator King will be presenting the Newport Spray Park grant request on August 18th at 11:50 AM in Olympia. Ms. Endahl will be at the next council meeting to present the grant request to the Council.
Mayor Sands asked the Council to mark their calendars for the grand opening/ribbon cutting of TJ Kelly Park on August 20th from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Invitations are being mailed out.
A financial report was given to the Council for their review.
OLD BUSINESS:
NEW BUSINESS:
Mayor Sands read the Proclamation declaring August 06, 2010 as Power of Purple Day in support of Relay for Life.
Pend Oreille County Inspector Botzheim gave a law enforcement update. He stated that an eleven year old boy got hit by a car today in the crosswalk by the Post Office. He has some bumps and bruises but will be ok. He stated that the City could almost put a light there with the amount of traffic at that intersection. He also recommended some better signage to clearly designate crosswalks. Inspector Botzheim left some information for City Administrator King to review regarding the jail and dispatch contracts. There were 199 calls for service in July compared to 193 the year before and 185 last month. There have been a number of burglaries throughout the county.
Councilmember Smith moved to approve Resolution 80210 adopting a special event application and authorizing the City Administrator to determine when it will be required; Councilmember Campbell seconded. Motion carried.
Councilmember Campbell moved to approve Agreement NP2010-5 Pend Oreille County
2008/2009 AFG participation Interlocal Agreement for fire pagers; Councilmember
Brooks seconded. Motion carried.
